Skinwalker Ranch is a 512-acre property in Utah's Uintah Basin that has been the subject of extraordinary claims: UFO sightings, cattle mutilations, poltergeist activity, shapeshifting creatures, and portals to other dimensions. It gained fame through a book, a TV show, and a billionaire's investigation.
The History
The ranch was purchased in 1996 by Robert Bigelow, a billionaire aerospace entrepreneur, who funded the National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS) to study it. NIDS researchers spent years on the property and reported strange phenomena — but produced no peer-reviewed scientific evidence.
In 2016, Bigelow sold the ranch to Brandon Fugal, a real estate mogul, who opened it to the History Channel for the series The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch, which began airing in 2020.
The Claims vs. The Evidence
- UFOs: Witnesses report lights and objects in the sky, but no high-quality footage has been released that couldn't be explained by aircraft, satellites, or atmospheric phenomena
- Cattle mutilations: Similar reports occur nationwide and have been attributed by the FBI to natural predation and decomposition
- Radiation anomalies: The TV show highlights radiation readings, but independent scientists have noted that the methodology is questionable and results are not replicated under controlled conditions
- Shapeshifters: The "skinwalker" name comes from Navajo legend about witches who can transform into animals. No physical evidence of shapeshifting has ever been documented

It's worth noting that many Navajo people find the commercialization of the "skinwalker" concept disrespectful. In Navajo culture, skinwalkers (yee naaldlooshii) are a serious and feared concept, not entertainment.
Our Verdict
Skinwalker Ranch as a paranormal hotspot is not supported by scientific evidence. Despite decades of investigation and millions of dollars spent, no peer-reviewed study has confirmed any supernatural activity. The ranch is real — the paranormal claims are not verified.
