The Illuminati is perhaps the most famous conspiracy theory in the world: a secret society of elites who supposedly control governments, banks, media, and entertainment from the shadows. But like many conspiracies, the truth is more interesting than the theory.
The Real Illuminati
The Illuminati was a real organization. The Order of the Illuminati was founded on May 1, 1776, by Adam Weishaupt, a professor of law at the University of Ingolstadt in Bavaria (modern-day Germany). Key facts:
- The group promoted Enlightenment ideals: reason, secularism, and opposition to religious influence over public life
- At its peak, the Illuminati had roughly 2,000-3,000 members, including notable figures like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
- In 1785, Bavarian ruler Charles Theodore banned all secret societies, and the Illuminati was effectively disbanded
- There is no credible evidence that the organization survived past the 1780s
The Conspiracy Theory
The modern Illuminati conspiracy theory claims that the group never disbanded but went underground, and now controls:
- World governments and the "New World Order"
- The global banking system
- The entertainment industry (with celebrities allegedly signaling membership through hand gestures)
- Major world events
These claims have no evidence. The "Illuminati hand signs" attributed to celebrities (the triangle, the one-eye) are ordinary gestures repurposed by conspiracy theorists.

Submit Your QuestionWhy the Theory Persists
Conspiracy theories about hidden controllers appeal to our need to explain complex, chaotic world events. It's psychologically comforting to believe someone is in charge — even a malevolent someone — rather than accept that the world is complex and largely uncontrolled.
Our Verdict
The historical Illuminati was real — but it was disbanded in 1785. The modern conspiracy theory claiming a secret world-controlling Illuminati has no evidence. It's a myth sustained by pattern-seeking, misinterpreted symbolism, and the human need for simple explanations of complex events.
