Slenderman is a tall, faceless figure in a black suit, often depicted with tentacle-like arms, who lurks near children. He became one of the internet's most famous horror creations — and one of the few fictional characters to inspire real-world violence.
The Origin
Slenderman was created on June 10, 2009, by Eric Knudsen (username "Victor Surge") for a Photoshop contest on the Something Awful forum. The contest challenged users to create paranormal images. Knudsen submitted two black-and-white photos with a tall, suited figure digitally inserted, accompanied by fictional captions.
The character was an immediate hit. Within weeks, the community had created an extensive mythology, including stories, videos (the "Marble Hornets" YouTube series), and games.

Submit Your QuestionThe 2014 Stabbing
On May 31, 2014, two 12-year-old girls in Waukesha, Wisconsin, lured their friend into the woods and stabbed her 19 times. The victim survived. The attackers said they did it to prove Slenderman was real and to become his "proxies." Both were tried as adults and committed to mental health institutions.
This case raised serious questions about the impact of internet horror content on vulnerable young people, but also highlighted that the attackers had pre-existing mental health issues.
Our Verdict
Slenderman is definitively not real. His origin is documented — he was created by Eric Knudsen in a Photoshop contest in 2009. There is no ambiguity. However, the real-world violence inspired by the character demonstrates the power of internet mythology and the importance of media literacy.
