Key Facts

The Chupacabra (literally "goat-sucker" in Spanish) is a creature said to attack and drain the blood of livestock, particularly goats. First reported in Puerto Rico in 1995, the legend quickly spread across Latin America and the southern United States.

The Original Sightings

The first reported Chupacabra attacks occurred in March 1995 in Puerto Rico, where eight sheep were found dead with puncture wounds and allegedly drained of blood. Eyewitness Madelyne Tolentino described seeing a creature with large eyes, spikes down its back, and a bipedal stance.

Investigator Benjamin Radford later discovered that Tolentino's description closely matched the alien creature from the 1995 film Species, which she had recently watched. This suggests the original description was influenced by science fiction rather than an actual animal.

What Are People Actually Finding?

Numerous "Chupacabra" carcasses have been recovered over the years. In every case where DNA testing was performed, the animals turned out to be:

  • Coyotes or dogs with severe mange: Sarcoptic mange causes hair loss, thickened skin, and a grotesque appearance that makes familiar animals look alien
  • Raccoons: Also affected by mange, creating an unfamiliar appearance

The "blood draining" claim has also been debunked — veterinary examination of allegedly attacked livestock found normal blood coagulation, not the complete draining described in legends.

Our Verdict

The Chupacabra is not real. The original sighting was likely influenced by a science fiction movie, and every physical specimen identified as a Chupacabra has turned out to be a known animal suffering from mange. The legend is a modern myth, fueled by fear and misidentification.
