Fairies — small supernatural beings with magical powers — appear in the folklore of virtually every European culture and beyond. From the Irish sidhe to the English pixies, fairy legends have persisted for centuries. But is there any evidence they exist?

The Folklore

Unlike the cute, winged creatures of Disney films, traditional fairies were often depicted as dangerous and unpredictable. In Celtic folklore, fairies could steal children (replacing them with "changelings"), curse crops, and lure travelers to their death. Iron was believed to repel them, and many rural traditions involved leaving offerings to appease the fairy folk.

The Cottingley Fairies Hoax

The most famous "evidence" for fairies came in 1917, when two young girls in Cottingley, England — Frances Griffiths and Elsie Wright — produced photographs showing them playing with fairies. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (creator of Sherlock Holmes) championed the photos as genuine proof. In 1983, the women finally admitted the fairies were cardboard cutouts held up with hat pins, copied from a children's book.

Modern Sightings

Some people continue to report fairy sightings, particularly in Ireland and Iceland, where surveys show a significant percentage of the population believes in elves or "hidden people." However, these reports are anecdotal and culturally influenced — no physical evidence has ever been produced.

Our Verdict

Fairies are not real. They are a rich and fascinating part of global folklore, but no scientific evidence supports their existence. The most famous evidence — the Cottingley photographs — was a confirmed hoax.
