Key Facts

  • The Momo Challenge terrified parents worldwide, with claims that a creepy figure was encouraging children to harm themselves. We separate fact from panic.
  • Editorial verdict: Fake
  • Estimated reading time: 2 minutes (262 words)

In 2018-2019, a global panic erupted over the "Momo Challenge" — claims that a terrifying figure with bulging eyes was contacting children through WhatsApp and YouTube, encouraging self-harm and suicide. Schools sent warnings, celebrities spoke out, and parents were terrified. But was any of it real?

The Image

The creepy image associated with Momo is actually a sculpture called "Mother Bird" created by Japanese special effects artist Keisuke Aiso for a 2016 art exhibition. The sculpture — depicting a woman with bird legs and an unsettling face — was photographed and circulated online, eventually becoming attached to the "challenge" narrative.

Aiso himself was distressed by the association and has since destroyed the sculpture.

The "Challenge"

Despite worldwide media coverage:

  • No deaths or injuries have been directly linked to the Momo Challenge
  • No evidence was found of a coordinated campaign targeting children
  • UK charity the Samaritans, the NSPCC, and Snopes all concluded it was a moral panic
  • YouTube stated it found no evidence of Momo content being spliced into children's videos

How the Panic Spread

The Momo Challenge is a textbook example of a moral panic. Local news stations ran stories warning parents, which caused more people to search for information, which generated more stories. Social media amplified unverified claims. The fear spread faster than anyone could verify the facts.

Our Verdict

The Momo Challenge was not real. It was a moral panic built around a misused sculpture image. No evidence of a coordinated "challenge" was ever found, and no harm was directly attributed to it. The real danger was the panic itself.
